Sheryl Crow

The Roots N Blues festival is back.

After experiencing the same setback which befell so many 2020 festivals, leading to a cancellation, Columbia's homegrown, nationally known event is back. This year's lineup takes many roads into rock, folk, country, soul and pop — and, this year, the festival represents an empowered, empowering testament to the genius of women in all these genres.

Here's a brief look at what you need to know before you go:

When and where is this year's festival?

September 24-26 at Stephens Lake Park in Columbia. The festival begins Friday evening at 5. Saturday and Sunday schedules run from early afternoon through the last act.

Who are this year's headliners?

Sheryl Crow (Sunday), Brandi Carlile (Saturday), Mavis Staples (Sunday), Tank and the Bangas (Saturday) and Lennon Stella (Friday) are among this year's headliners.

Country legend Tanya Tucker, originally slated as one of Friday evening's headliners, canceled her remaining 2021 tour dates in early September, citing the effects of a recent hip surgery and general concerns about the pandemic.

Before the 2020 festival was canceled, organizers made a commitment to female representation in every performing slot, a commitment to be fulfilled with the 2021 lineup.

Who are some other exciting acts on the bill?

Rising country star Mickey Guyton, sister act Larkin Poe, blues and gospel stalwart Shemekia Copeland, pop firecracker Betty Who and modern mariachis Flor de Toloache are among the other promising acts scheduled to perform.

How many musicians have Missouri ties?

Crow famously grew up in southeast Missouri and graduated from the University of Missouri. Singer-songwriter Natalie Hemby's 2017 album "Puxico" was titled in tribute to her Missouri hometown. Country singer Kassi Ashton hails from California in Moniteau County.

The band One Way Traffic calls St. Louis home, and blues singer Amanda Fish has a Kansas City ZIP code.

Halle Kearns

A number of local or formerly local acts also play this year's fest, including: Halle Kearns, The Burney Sisters, Molly Healey String Project, Sifa and Violet and the Undercurrents.

How do I get there?

Other than ADA options, there is no car parking at Stephens Lake Park during the fest. Free shuttles run from downtown city garages to the festival or bike parking is available at the park.

What is the festival's wristband system? How does it work?

Festival transactions work solely through RFID (radio-frequency identification) wristbands that festivalgoers load and reload like a "digital wallet," as the festival website describes it. This creates a cashless, largely contact-less experience in which visitors pay for everything from food and beverage to merchandise and more by tapping their wristbands at vendor booths.

Can my kids come?

Kids age 14 and under are admitted free, if accompanied by an adult. The festival maintains an atmosphere that will feel friendly and welcoming to most families.

What are the festival's COVID-19 protocols?

The festival will require attendees either provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative test received less than 72 hours before the date to gain entry

Is the festival accessible?

ADA parking is available at Riechmann Pavilion in the park. The festival also offers cart shuttles, accessible porta-potties and more. Learn more about accessibility at https://rootsnbluesfestival.com/visiting-the-festival/accessibility/.

What else is happening that weekend?

The Betsy Farris Memorial Run will take place Sept. 25. Named for a late organizer of the festival, the run offers 5K, 10K and half-marathon options.

How long has Roots N Blues been around?

The festival — then called Roots N Blues N BBQ — began in 2007 downtown, a free event celebrating the anniversary of then-Boone County National Bank. The lineup that year included Taj Mahal, Tab Benoit and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

The festival quickly caught on, becoming its own entity with expanded lineups and both ticketed and free stages. In 2013, Roots N Blues moved to Stephens Lake Park, becoming a completely ticketed event. Festival alumni include:

  • The Avett Brothers
  • Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
  • John Prine
  • Emmylou Harris
  • Ben Folds
  • Buddy Guy
  • Dwight Yoakam
  • Punch Brothers
  • Blues Traveler
  • Los Lobos
  • Trombone Shorty and Orleans Ave.
  • Booker T.
